Chapter 8 Respone_Michael

In chapter 8 the subject topic is the level of happiness people get varying from different countries. The way they categorized and judge was by labeling two opposite ideas such as indulgence and restraint  which are some of the factors that determine people’s level of happiness. The correlation of happiness, importance, and life control of leisure is different by every culture. In the American culture people are more hedonistic which would be more indulgence then restraint because they want instant gratification or pleasure. In indulgent culture, people are happy because they lead less restrictive lives. This lifestyle is based on and dictated by peoples emotions or feelings as opposed to the long term more intelligent choice to make. In this lifestyle there is more time for leisure. Although money and happiness are often thought to be connected to each other but some of the poorest nations have the highest rates of happiness. This being because of how simple they live their lives and there is less stress to impress by society standards or to keep up with a gaudy, pretentious lifestyle.
