Welcome to the Blog!

Hey everyone!  I hope you had as much fun as I did in our first class.  I'm looking forward to hearing any reactions to the first class.  What do you hope to gain from this class?  Any ideas for research symposium?

  1. I hope that through this course I am able to learn many interesting things about Macau, as well as about my partner in general. I think that this class is a great opportunity for individuals from different cultures to really share their experiences in a way that cannot be done in traditional classes. I also think it will be fun to learn about different cultures in general and share ideas with our partners about the viewpoints that we have that could be different from each other.

  2. Thoughts for the first class: I was very happy to be able to meet friends in the first class. Having several self-introduction sessions helped me understand much about my classmates.

What I want to learn from this class: I am looking forward to the discussion. I believe it will help me deepen my thoughts and know many new ideas and values. I would like to know more about Macau, which I believe is one of the most interesting places in the world (politically, economically, and culturally).

Topic for the sympodium: I have some ideas in my mind. I am looking forward to talking about it in the class!

  3. Based off the first class that I attended, I think that this class is going to be a lot of fun. Everyone I talked to was very nice and I look forward to working with my partners in the future.

I hope that this class will help me learn more about the values and beliefs of different cultures. Doing this will allow me to hold a better understanding of groups of people who differ from me, especially the students from Macau. I think that differences between cultures should be celebrated and that taking this class is a great way to do so.

  6. One idea that I found interesting from the reading is called the “moral circle”. The moral circle involves people that an individual relates to and considers to be a part of his or her group. These people include one’s family, friends, and professors. The moral circle also comprises of other groups of people which may pertain to religion, politics, and sports. They have an large effect on a person’s viewpoints and feelings. For instance, they can cause a person to feel either shame or pride depending on the actions of the group. Because of the moral circle, individuals can establish a sense of belonging (p. 12). Despite the sense of belonging that a person may feel, there also exists the possibility of conflicts between people of different groups. Conflicts, such as discrimination against difference races, religions, and political parties, create problems such as crime, poverty, and war which make the lives of human beings more miserable (pg. 13). However, if people decide to communicate with each other in a peaceful and understanding manner, these problems can be resolved. As a result, the world will be a better place for everyone.

  7. I am really forward to having more chances to communicate with my partner and other classmates. I think this is an interesting course, which is quite different from traditional courses. I hope I will learn to view things from a more global perspective after taking this course. I will spend more time on thinking about the research symposium. See you all in the afternoon!
