Ch 6 response by Kira

Ch 6 is about "avoidance of uncertainty". According to the definition the writer mentioned, it is "the extent to which the members of a culture feel threatened by ambiguous or unknown situations". The writer introduced a method to measure the degree of avoidance of uncertainty of different countries. Not surprisingly, China has a pretty low index which means it is a weak uncertainty-avoidance country.

One thing I really agree with the writer, that is , "aggression and emotions are not supposed to be shown", which is the main different between eastern and western cultures. I remember one of my professor told us that when he worked in Thailand, people who worked under him never said "no". Whatever he told them to do, they answered "Yes". However, in fact, sometimes they were not able to do what he told them. This is okay for the people in the same culture, but it will be trouble when communicating to people from different culture. One very daily example is that in University of Macau, when professors ask "Any questions?", Macau students merely ask question even they have, and usually students who ask questions are international students. This problem involved not only avoidance of uncertainty but also many other factors. And I think this is one of the main problems when people from different cultures communicate.
