This chapter
talks about the uncertainty avoidance in different countries. The UAI Values
shows that China is a weak avoidance country. Well, I have different views on
that and I’d like share my thoughts by discussing the uncertainty avoidance in
the family in China.
Let’s
talk about the parents in China, though China is considered as a weak avoidance
country, however, I think Chinese parents behave more likely in the high avoidance
way. For example, they wouldn’t let their children out of their sight. Parents
try to stop every possible movement that might “hurt” their children. In my
family, my aunt and uncle even don’t allow their children stand on the sofa
because they are afraid of their children falling down. If children are running
around and fall down on the ground, parents will immediately pick them up and
console the child. It might because of the One Child Policy in China. Since there
is only one child, maximum two in a family, how can the parents not pay fully
attention to their kid(s)? They try to do in everything for their kid(s) and
take care of them in case they get “hurt”. Therefore, I think Chinese is not
being weak avoidance in all situations.
