Response of chapter 6 by KU

This chapter talks about uncertainty avoidance. As usual, I tried to guess what it means before I read it. “People try to avoid uncertainty” That’s what came on my mind. It seems uncertainty is no good as people want to avoid it. Is it really true?

“The essence of uncertainty is that it is a subjective experience.” Quoted from P189. The writer used an example of a lion tamer to illustrate this. A lion tamer won’t feel uncomfortable because he knows his animals well. He can predict what will happen with his animals so there is no uncertainty for him. He has been practicing a lot. People do many things to eliminate uncertainty. They practice to fight uncertainty. Moreover, people invent technology and set up laws to eliminate the uncertain conditions.

Uncertainty makes surprise and avoiding uncertainty is kind of like promoting stability. In terms of a large community, stable development is important. But in terms of individual, people would like to have some uncertainty to make them special. It seems that the importance of avoid uncertainty is related to importance of approval of others. Such as in work places, if people are company-oriented, they work for the company. They hope that everything is under control. While if people are self-oriented, they work for their own. They would like something uncertain to make themselves outstanding. In conclude, the importance of uncertainty avoidance really depends. But in the general case of talking about society, it works.
