This chapter
talks about the happiness of people and the differences between indulgent and
restrained societies.
The
survey reveals that the people who are satisfied with their lives and feel
happy most of the time are typically poor or not particularly wealthy. They are
usually located in western Africa and in northern Latin America.
Actually,
I don’t feel surprised with that because I do believe that the poor are not
doomed to be unhappy, I think it depends where the people live. The poor might
have a higher possibility to be unhappy if they live in a wealthy district/
region where the gap between the wealth and the poor is apparent and poverty is
especially in the extreme.
By contrast, if everyone in the district/ region is
not that rich, everyone might just share nearly the same living condition and
the social inequality is not prominent, people there might not have much to
compare with others, they might be easier to be satisfied with what they have
and be happier.
