Last Friday's class mainly discussed about cultural
differences from various aspects, namely individual level, societal level and
national level. We discovered the diversity from individual and societal levels
by filling in the 8 most identical characteristics of us. Communicating with
the other classmates, I did realize that individual preferences were highly influenced
by social rules of a community as a whole. Take Margo and me for example, she first
identified herself as a daughter while I chose Chinese to be the most important
label. This result has something to do with American’s individualism and
Chinese collectivism cultures. Maybe people in US regard their personal life as
well as self-interest prior to national interests but as for Chinese we would
usually put the country’s interest at the first place even though we are not
aware of that.
As for the cultural differences from a national level, we watched
movies promoting Macau and US. I learned a lot from the Macau film, since it
was mainly focused on the historical heritages and some of them I even didn’t
know. Unlike the Macau one, the US short film showed more modern and diverse
side of American culture. Although some of us criticized it, I still found the
music “The land of dreams” impressing. It reminded me of the story of “American
dreams”, which is about how tens of thousands of migrants fought for their dreams
in US. They are so brave and tough that I am really moved as well as encouraged
by them!
