The reading of
this week discussed the power distance in various cultures. The author showed
the results of the inquiries for people in various countries, whose results
were different by country. He suggested that the difference came from several
factors, such as history, educational system, and family.
It was very interesting
to read the idea of the author regarding the relationship between education,
workplace and power distance. I agree to the point that power distance affects the
content of the education, and the atmosphere and content of the work. For
example, in Japan, a country whose power distance is large, teachers are
dominant and students are required not to against the teachers. On the other
hand, in the United States, teachers welcome students’ asking questions and showing
disagreements to teachers’ ideas.
I think language
is one of the biggest factors which determine the power distance within the
country. For example, Japanese have more kinds of courteous styles than English,
such as honorific expressions and humbles, which people have to use properly in
many occasions.
