Watching the videos about these various countries really made me miss traveling abroad and all of the excitement that comes along with experiencing a foreign country for the first time. It is also interesting to consider how much tradition and history is steeped in China and Japan, which is kind of unfortunate because in the US, we don't have the opportunity to look back into our history or at landmarks from thousands of years in the past--or really anything within the past few hundred years.
I thought it was eye-opening to perform our skits and to see the vast differences between high and low power cultures and the different ways in which my classmates and I have grown up. It was especially interesting to me because at the beginning of planning our skits, I was in the high power culture group and I had absolutely no idea how to behave! Then we switched our groups around and I was part of the low power culture group--meaning that I was the only person in my group who had grown up in that type of culture. Surprisingly, I found it very difficult to explain how people would behave in the workplace, even though I have always worked in a low power culture system. It really made me wonder about how differently my past schooling and job opportunities would have been had I lived in the opposite power culture system.
