We watched two videos in class; one is about Macau and the other is
about the U.S. – both of them were taken to introduce and promote the tourism
for both countries. The video of Macau were mainly about its traditional
culture; it introduced various world heritages, such as Catholic churches and traditional
buildings. The culture of Macau is a mixture of East (China) and West (Portugal),
which was very interesting.
When I watched the video of the U.S., I felt the pride that the U.S.
is a mixture of various cultures and people. It also introduced the bright
perspective of the U.S.; everybody come here for more opportunity and chances. However,
I thought that the video did not match its original purpose. It should have
introduced the U.S. in another way, such as focusing more about various cities or
introduce more luxurious perspective, such as Hollywood and beautiful beach.
In
our discussion, we talked about the symbol of the country. For example, people
in Macau introduce their country, using the picture of the world heritages or
casino. The responses of students from the U.S. were very interesting; each of
them has a different idea.
At the end of the class, we did a game to discover who we are. The rule
of the game is following: writing the words or sentences that distinguish “you”
from “others” on the sheet of paper. After the exercise, I found out that what
I wrote in the paper was strongly influenced by the environment, such as where
I was. For example, if I were in my home country, I would write a different
thing.
The
idea that other students suggested in the discussion were very interesting. One
student explained that she wrote not “what others thought of her” but “what she
thought of herself.” The other student maintained that what she wrote was a
comparison and contrast with other people.
